I was thinking about this when I saw the post about Dragon Chiang. You have had a nice run of inkers on your books over the years. How did you hook up with all these guys? Alcatena, Glanzman, Bradstreet, and a few others Im forgetting. Thats some pretty solid company. Did you handpick these guys, get lucky, etc?

I picked Alcatena, Glanzman and Bradstreet. Of course, I prefer to pick my own inkers when I can. There were a couple of projects where it was tough for me to do. Mike Bair inked the Kents and Rick Magyar inked Lone Ranger & Tonto. Tim Tyler inked a cover did for him once, but it didn't see publication.

Of everyone who has inked me (and with no slights meant towards any of the others, I assure you) I liked Alcatena's inks best. He took my work to an entirely new level. He is simply amazing. I'll be ading a link to his website page soon, on my "Links" page (of all places). I just discovered it last night.

I always thought that inking another artist would be a really cool excercise. I'd love to try inking Paul Gulacy, for instance.

I dont blame you on Alcatena, hes one of my all time favorite artists. I think hes just crazy good. I definetly had not heard of him till he started to ink your stuff, but since then I buy anything he does sight unseen. Hes a frequent ebay search for me, his stuff is hard to find. His stuff for batman, conan and the stuff he did with you like spider and hawkman are just some awesome stuff. Glanzman was real good as was Bradstreet. Magyar and Blair did a good job too, but I gotta agree with you that Alcatena is the man. Ill have to check his website out, never knew he had one.

Gulacy is really good, never seen you ink someone else (at least not that I can think of), but I cant blame you for wanting to ink him hes real good.

Just to add, it would be cool if you inked and colored somebodys stuff...

Dat's right-- I inked Rags on that issue of Hawkman-- actually I was "finisher" on a few pages. Really enjoyable job. I loves me some Rags Morales, and I love his art style. Besides inking Ben Dunn and Tod Fox in the Scout issues that they did, the Hawkman tale is the only full book I can ever remember inking.

In the 80's, I inked a Flint Henry short (6 page?) story in Radio Boy. I've also inked a few covers-- a couple of Stan Woch Airboy covers; one of Scot Eaton's Creature Commandos covers when we were doing that book together; Tim Bradstreet on a Dragon Chiang T-shirt design (the art is included in the Dragon Chiang reprint book that's available at this site in the TIMBOMART section); Alcatena's covers on the second Eclipse Spider series. If any more occur to me I'll leave an update here.

Inking someone else is quit fun, actually.

Its probably been said somewhere before, but whats the difference between "inker" and "finisher"?

A "finisher" is actually completing or detailing much of the drawing over loose pencils or even rough layouts. An "inker" is usually working with tighter, more detailed and complete art from a penciller.

I've just got to say that of everything that's been inked by someone else, Hawkworld with Alcatena is just beautiful. It's got one of my favorite sequences in the first book where Hal, the first Shayera and her father are on the island hunting. When Katar's back is turned to her, Shayera aims her rifle at Katar and then put's it back down. That was just a beautifully drawn sequence of panels.

Thanks so much! I'm really proud of that sequence. I was trying to get across a pivotal point in the story without using any words. That scene is the beginning of Katar's "dark" period, when he realizes that the history of his world is a lie and the memories of the heroes of Thanagar were used to foster opression. Sort of like real life. I had to take Katar to a bad place in his soul and spirit so that he could "arise phoenix-like" (as they say) and become a true hero.

I tried emailing Alcatena a few weeks ago and got no reply. I hope he is doing well. If anyone catches word of what he's doing these days, please let me know.

Tim,
would you ever consider posting your pencils in higher res samples for comic hopefuls and fans to ink, color or both?
It would be a real hoot to tackle some of your stuff.

I can occasionally send higher rez JPEGs of some of the pieces to folks who are interested. However, it depends on the piece, since certain pages are copyrighted by folks other than myself.

Hey Timbo,

I assume that includes Conan. Any chance of getting a high-res Scout? Here's a piece I recently inked, I hope you don't mind me posting...

I like the inkers you have been paired up with. Bradstreet is awesome, but the best one in my opinion is Glanzman. The detail in Two Gun Mojo in particular is unbelievable. The gunfight as Jonah is leaving town before the lynching is not only beautiful to look at, but done as you drew it not as horrific as it could have been. I actually own a page of Riders of the worm and was amazed at the detail ya'll put into that too. I even have this Black lamb page that you did an intresting thing with a plastic overlay on it. I would love to know why and the particulars...that is if you don't mind me asking.

Plastic overlay? Wow-- I don't remember that! Probably a color hold of somekind, which, with the advent of computer scanning and digital color, we don't have to do now. Thank God. (I love the digital era, I must say.)
