SKETCHBOOK ROUGH, MARLOW AND THE HELMSMAN

This and the next three plates give you an idea of my typical process for tackling designs and illustrations, from rough sketch to finished illustration. This is a rough concept drawing from my "Inner Station" sketchbook. Once I started getting closer to Marlow's final character design down, the old boy started talking to me. I developed this action scene. This very rough sketch depicts an early version of "Marlow", our lead character, and the android called the "Helmsman", one of the crewmen from his ship. With this sketch, I started trying out a more "Victorian Sci-Fi" look-- the future according to 1890. The following pieces will give you a step-by-step look at my usual working process, from sketch to rough to pencils to inks. Note that the Helmsman will probably be redesigned for the final book.
